The historic Lester Smith Lookout Tower, an old water storage tower built in 1883, as people started getting tired of getting water from the river, or from the well near the present shell service station.
In 1973 the huge lookout tower was lifted to the top to provide a full panoramic view of Kerang, the Loddon River nearby and the surrounding district.
A power station was located on this site 1917-1960's.
The Sir John Gorton Library next door of ultra Modern design was built in 2003.
The tower is located at the corner of the Murray Valley Highway (Wellington St) and Shadforth St.
The Lester-Smith Lookout Tower is now being used as part of The Kerang Information Centre. The Lester-Smith Water Tower is open daily from 10.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. to see the views around Kerang from the Lookout Tower.
