LEAGHUR STATE PARK
A few more kms down the Boort Road is the entrance to Leaghur State Park.
Leaghur State Park protects some of the most significant Black Box wetland and woodland communities in Victoria. The Park provides opportunities for visitors to enjoy and experience its natural and cultural values in the midst of a largely agricultural landscape. Flooding can occur in winter and spring, replenishing the park with vigorous growth, resulting in rich stunning wetlands. There are some seasonal closures of tracks to minimise damage during flooding. Explore the tranquil setting, majestic River Red Gums and water birds. Stroll through the Black Box woodlands off some of the tracks. Many trees are scarred by Aboriginal people who used the bark for canoes, shields and shelters. The canoes were presumably used to catch some of the local waterbirds. Saw and axe marks bear testimony to the early days of European Settlement.
A self-drive pamphlet is available at the entrance to the park.
Part of the Loddon River flood plain, the flood waters replenish the wetlands rich in plant life, bird life- Whistling Kites, Brown Falcons, Pelicans, Swans, also Wallabys and Kangaroos. Picnic and BBQ facilities are located near the entrance to Leaghur State Park and also at Lake Meran. Camping is permitted at the Lake Meran Picnic area.
